Widget,

We  don't have any interior curtains.  We have textaline on the outside of the big windows in the Walkthrough.  This cuts down on the sun coming in, and daytime 'look see' from dockwalkers.  But at night, you can see right through it.  I think the last time we were on a dock, I duct-taped something on the window facing the dock.

I am still contemplating.  Interior design is way way down on my skills/interest list.  The Walkthrough has big flat windows, and ours (which have been replaced) have big bolts spaced about 6" apart.  My latest idea is to put  flat curtains just sized for the window, with grommets just sized to slip over the bolts.

I have thought about frilly curtains hanging from the side of the cabin top, but anything I can think of will hang into the cabin about 6", and feels like it will reduce the interior volume by a little.

As long as we stay at anchor, we don't need curtains!!  But I have a bolt of cloth ready, for emergency situations!!

However, I have seen some boats with some really nice professionally-done window treatments.  You should walk a few boats like the Island Packets at the boat shows, and see what they are using.

Sorry no one else has responded with their solutions/ideas.

Sherry,
We are not to frilly either, but the wife got black out fabric which is white and is what you normally put on the back of drapes.  She just made them so you could put a rod or line through and they hang down below the bottom of the windows and block out the heat which they do well.  I put the line behind the facia(sp) boards over the windows so you couldn't see it.

Widgett, we sort of have curtains.  With the exception of the shower and in the galley and over the chart table they are all decorative. We have a 37 B so head is all the way forward.  There is a shower curtain across this area on a rod that is expandable from one hull to the other.  The forward port in the head does not have a curtain.  In the masters bunk there is a decorative curtain just above the entrance to the bunk, across the top about 12" in width.  We have a clock that fits over the porthole (no curtain) in this cabin on port side.  No cover on the port on starboard.  In main saloon no curtains on ports.  In galley (Port) and over chart table (Starboard) there are decorative curtains tied to hand rails that are in front of both ports.  These can be closed but are really decorative as well.  I don't have close up pics of the curtain placement but could get some.  My wife has been in the business of custom decorative painting, decorating in houses and has tried to apply this approach on our boat. Let me know if you have any questions.

The PO had made this type of cover for the ovals.  The fabric was worn from the sun so we made these using block out on the sun facing sides.  They look good, you can roll them up and tuck them between the hinges if you want to look out or when you open the port they just rest on top.  Attached with decorative string to the hinges.

Really not a curtain but a port covering. I recently installed a static film that has lots of small holes. I can see out fine but it is difficult to see in. The film also cuts down on the heat inside the boat. So far I can recommend it. Since it is static film you can remove it and place the covers in a large envelope. I have it on my ports and the large opening hatches in the main cabin.

Peter, I like the look.  Could you give us more info on the material and where it can be found?

Thanks

It is called Static Cling Dot Matrix Window Film. You can find it on Google at http://www.google.com/products?q=Static+Cling+Dot+Matrix+Window&oe=utf-8&client=firefox-a&hl=en&scoring=p. I chose the silver film for my windows. You have to take your time when trimming it. a sharp razor blade and a credit card as a guide helps.
